Infusing Water

Ridin' the Wave

If there is one simple thing we can all do to feel better it’s to drink more water. We also have a tendency to mistake thirst for hunger, so staying properly hydrated can help you shed a few pounds. Men need to drink around 2 liters of water a day and women 1.6 liters, that’s 8-10 glasses which seems like a lot! You might need more than this depending on how much you are exercising, the weather and your weight.

Getting an infusing water bottle is a great way to add some flavour to your water, as well as being more economical and much healthier than drinking sugary soft drinks or juices (or alcohol).

Being well hydrated can have all sorts of benefits. It can aid poor digestion, reduce acne and cellulite, and even help you lose weight. Infusing your own water is the simplest and healthiest way to add some flavour (and extra nutrients!) to your water.

An excellent idea is to keep a pitcher of infused water in your fridge, or buy a BPA free infusing water bottle you can carry round with you.

If you’re wondering what ‘BPA free’ means and why it is important (I’m assuming you have the same lack of knowledge as I do), BPA is an organic synthetic compound used in plastics. It exhibits some hormone like properties that have caused concern about its use in food containers. It could mimic the behaviour of estrogen and may not be suitable for very young children or pregnant women

Or your could always just use whatever jar you have lying around and then strain the fruit out. Still it’s kind of handy and saves you messing around trying to filter things.

Anyway, now you have your infusion device, we are all ready with some suggestions from Cub Soda’s resident nutrition expert, Samantha Waterhouse, on what to put in it:

“You can use any fruit, veggies, herbs or supplements you like, these are just suggestions to give you some ideas.

Apple and Cinnamon Sliced green apple and a stick of cinnamon. This is great if you’re feeling hungry as it can help balance your blood sugar.

Mango Mojito 6-8 mint leaves, half a mango, chopped slice of lime

Watermelon Detox 4 cubes of watermelon and 6 coriander leaves

Citrus Bliss Three lemon and two lime slices

Calm Cup 1 cup fresh berries, small handful mint, 2 tablespoons honey

Lymph Weight Loss Flush ½ grapefruit sliced, 2 tablespoons vitamin C powder, 2 tablespoons honey (or 3 drops stevia)

Whatever you pick, you need to chop it up and add it to your water or infusion bottle. Infuse for 1-2 hours at room temperature or 3-4 hours in the fridge. If you infuse for 4 or more hours, consider moving the fruit and vegetables as they may begin to negatively affect the flavour. Drink within 3 days. These suggestion are for 32oz of water, you might want to adjust the quantities based on how much water you are infusing and how strong a flavour you would like.”
