What is: Coconut Water

What is it?

The clear water inside young green coconuts.

Allegedly it’s a kind of natural sports drink with low levels of fat, carbohydrates and calories, and a significant electrolyte content.

What does it taste like?

Like drinking someone else’s phlegm.

Some people say it tastes naturally refreshing with a sweet, nutty taste. I am not one of those people. It does significantly improve if heavily chilled though. Try putting it in something else like a smoothie or buying a flavoured variety.

Where can I get it?

The most common brand is Vita Coco which is available from supermarkets, Boots, and Whole Foods. Priced around £1.50 for 330ml. Going all out you can buy raw, unpasteurized, coconut water from Roots and Bulbs. It’s £6 for 250ml and only available in London.

If you go to Las Iguanas you can buy their Naked Nut, which is literally just a tapped coconut with a straw. It costs £4.50 and feels very tropical. If you are going to try coconut water I suggest you do this, because at least then the packaging is fun. Also whoever you’re with will probably want to try it if turns out you can’t stand the stuff.

Alternately you can try this:

Recipe: Coconut and Watermelon Breeze

705ml cubed chilled watermelon
235ml coconut water
Squeeze of fresh lime
Sprig of mint

Throw it all in a blender. Blend till smooth. Garnish with watermelon slices and mint.
